Answers written in incomplete sentences are like songs with missing notes! They just don’t sound right! Follow the steps below to be sure that you’re never “off beat”!

1) Read the question.
What are the four regions of California?

2) Cross out what you don’t need (i.e.: the question
words and the question mark).
What are the four regions of California?

3) Write what’s left of the question. Move words
around if necessary.

are the four regions of California changes to
The four regions of California are

4) Complete the answer. Be sure to end with the
correct punctuation mark.

The four regions of California are the Central Valley,
the desert, the mountains, and the Pacific Coast.

number.
6,270,513 – The place of the
underlined digit is the hundred
thousands.

Value: The worth of a digit within a number.
6,270,513 – The value of the underlined digit is 200,000.

Standard Form: The typical way we write numbers.
1,347,865

Expanded Form: A way of writing numbers that separates the value of each digit.
1,000,000 + 300,000 + 40,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 60 + 5

Written Form: A way of writing numbers that uses words, not numerals.
one million, three hundred forty-seven thousand, eight hundred sixty-five

Tips:
• When using written form, always put a hyphen (-) between the places of
tens and ones.
• The places within numbers will always stay the same. No matter what
numbers are used, the ten thousands place will always be the ten
thousands place.
• The values of numbers will change. A 3 in the tens places will have a
value of 30. A 3 in the hundred thousands place will have a value of
300,000.
